[Bangkok] Cabbages and Condoms

In a foreign country of great cultural diversity, one may opt to stay in the regularity of her own, or to embrace the richness of variety. It’s no different case when you are travelling with your dear younger bros, 14 and 12 years of age, and you are dealt with Thailand's approach to sexuality, or you come across an oddly named restaurant; Cabbages and Condoms (C&C), that is. But hey, never be misled and kept at bay.

Back in the days, cabbages were a dish of the poor. They’re aiming to make condoms as within reach and as accepted; hence, the name. C&C promotes awareness of family planning and is a leading light in the campaign for safe sex and HIV prevention. Moreover, profit goes toward supporting the work of the Population and Community Development Association (PDA), and that’s justly a worthy cause. PDA programs is at present covering over a third of Thailand and has helped lower national population growth rate from 3.2% in 1974 to 0.6% in 2005, and a 90% reduction in new HIV infections.

C&C is off the main street, tucked away in an alley of Sukhumvit Soi 12. It’s a hidden gem, indeed. If you can’t locate it, strive to find it nevertheless, because there are a great deal of perks and benefits that await. One of which is a free vasectomy from the clinic next door! Hahaha :)

Dark alleys are scary enough places on their own. What lies inside is come what may a different dimension, like an enchanting place filled with patio string lights and draping lamp shades. It was quaint, whimsical at some point and could somehow be compared to our very own (Philippines’) Cafe Juanita.

These are condom-dressed mannequins. Santa Claus, aren't you out of season?

If there's Captain Planet, there's Captain Condom!

Some may say it's like a fairyland, I say it's a condomland! There are just too many condoms everywhere.

Food wasn’t excellent, but it wasn’t of poor quality whichever. Using a 10-point system, with 10 being the highest, I’d give it a 7. It was satisfying, yes, but it just didn’t have that WOW factor. They have a great selection of dishes for vegetarians, too! I may very well say that every other aspect deserves praise, from decor, service, to value for money. I thoroughly enjoyed!

Together with the bill, restaurants usually provide complimentary mints; on the other hand, C&C does it their own unique way. You guessed it! This restaurant hands you a condom instead of a mint! If what comes with the bill isn’t adequate, take a few extras! They have two sizes by the way, Republican and Democrat. Hahaha :)

"Our food is guaranteed not to cause pregnancy." That's what their catchphrase says, and yes, I attest to that! :)

Post and photos were respectively written and taken by Hannah B. Reyno, the beautiful sister of Yay Reyno who is as busy as a bee reviewing at the moment. Any objections, clarifications, requests for informations, etc. must be addressed accordingly and calmly. Hahaha :)
